In my third annual time of doing this, I came across a lot of stuff since the last time, so this is my biggest one yet.
Click on the highlighted stuff to be taken to various track/album pages except for the ones that have embedded videos.
*Forlorn Kingdom, "Howling Winds": it takes about 40 seconds to get creepy and dreary but it sure as hell does, then melancholy during the last two out of its nine minute run time. My favorite piece from him out of his three albums though
*Shadow Dungeon, "Sorrowful Mystery" and "Noctural Creatures": these are creepy, but THE creepiest one is "Wandering Endlessly through the Mountains", although it takes a couple of minutes before getting there. This is probably THE most creepy dungeon synth piece I’ve ever heard, which is saying quite a bit!
*Celtic Frost
Like with last year’s post on the Broken Hope entry, this one made me go “how the hell did I forget about THIS?”. Because I only got the cd like 30 years ago! Well, like I said in a post about them a few months back, normally C. Frost was one of the earlier thrash/death metal bands to tune down in E, but in this case here you get someone who’s out of breath, there's some chanting and a bunch of sounds make up this ambient piece
From their second album, which is more of the same as the previous, just more horror-like
*Swartalf: Ok, I need to take a better look at my music collection to see if I’m missing anything *else* that I should include on here. Maybe because with industrial ambient that doesn’t exactly bring to mind “creepy” immediately or something.
I never have known what exactly this is about, but there’s a chant and off-kilter keyboards that make this a little unnerving
A bit worse with the creepy, droning, powerful keyboard, and the sound effect at 2:09 could be paired with seeing the motions of a knife stabbing (you’ll have to hear it to see what I mean). The male operatic singing is also unusual
Starting off with someone, lost, soaked by the rain (as you can hear when this starts) in a horror movie is a good start. There’s also some sound effects at about the 6:25 mark that brings to mind a dying mechanical beast (or something?), plus you add in a really odd guitar sound, sampled choirs, harsh distorted male vocals near the end and some creepy keyboards makes this a bit unsettling
This one has a typical horror movie intro with the cliched organ sound, followed by unusual keyboards later
*Desiderii Marginnis, "Chreston": how’d I forget this one too?! Ok, well, at least I put it on my very first post about dungeon synth/dark ambient music a few years back. Like I said there, this is a creepy ambient landscape piece where it sounds like there’s some kind of machine making a noise--maybe like a war machine that has devastated earth--which will eventually break down and then there’s nothing but quiet left...
*Candlemass, “March Funebre”: ok, so I DID think of this powerful doom metal piece–the “death march”– from their second album, at least. Sheesh...however, I can’t find it, except for a cover on YouTube. If someone else can find it, kindly post a link on here. This is a powerful rendition of the ancient Bach classical piece
*Northeast Dungeon Siege MMXXIII Compilation (Various Artists): the opening track from Alehoof, “Convulsive Dirge In The Horrid Hemlock Mist”, is pretty creepy, as well as the Gravelurker metal song of "Moonlight Requiem", although it has these death metal vocals that echo all over the damn place so it’s not for everyone. Can’t remember if any other tracks on the album are creepy or not
*Haudh, “Crimson Gaze of the Master”: this one has soundclips from some horror movie (my guess it’s from one of the million vampire movies out there). The previous track or two from this album might be creepy as well; can’t recall though
*Ortnit, “Erstarrt”: with this album having “Music inspired by the grief of Ortnit́s widow Sidrat!” (whoever those two were) this isn’t going to be a happy one. Here you’ve got a dark ambient undertone punctuated by some keyboards, wind and what’s like a deep-toned tempest bell clanging. You won’t be dancing to this one, that’s for sure
*Dahlia's Tear, “Altar of Ominous Spirits”: with a title like that, yeah, it’s going to be creepy. It’s described as “Ambient Witch Ritual Music” and “Exploring mythology, history and rituals of Witches this album brings forth atmospheric darkness and magic from beyond the astral plane.” Also, it’s another dark ambient soundscape with all kinds of dreadful, creepy sounds thrown in, both tribal and otherworldly
*Various Artists, Poe For Moderns With Buddy Morrow And His Spooky Friends: most of the stuff on this post here is different from all other artists and this one is no exception! This is a compilation album where nearly half of the tracks are from Buddy Morrow And His Orchestra (whoever they were) while the rest are from several other artists. The opening track starts and ends with fairly creepy whistling and another track has a horror movie laugh in it. Most of the rest of this is big band/swing music though! If my dad were still around I’m sure this would’ve been right up his alley
*Various Artists, Music For Abandoned Monasteries: with a name like that it’s not going to be happy, sappy pop crap. This is a compilation album with 15 dark ambient tracks by 15 artists (which, as the genres can cross over, yes, there’s several moments of dungeon synth elements in there too). However, the album’s misnamed, as “Music For Abandoned Monasteries” isn’t quite right, it’s more along the lines of “Music For The Post-Apocalypse Where You’re the Last Human Left and You’re Waiting and Praying For Death Because You’re Beyond Screwed”. With several of these dreary and/or creepy pieces, it is NOT recommended to listen to this in a darkened room with the lights off
*Gdanian, Mechanical Gods: after a while (several of the later tracks could be used for a blasted horror movie) this becomes THE most insanely creepy dark ambient album I’ve ever heard. (And the *previous* album was creepy? Hah!) This combines dark ambient soundscapes, very powerful (as hell!) dark electronics, the occasional ominous vocal, mechanical growls and some actual music thrown in here and there. Just note that, before it gets monstrously dark, a few minutes into the second track we get like a “captain’s log” of going to another planet and finding a group of humans that live underground and are sacrificing martyrs to some kind of robots or something in order to survive. This might seem a bit weird. Just buckle up, though, because it gets far worse afterwards
*John Carpenter Bandcamp library: yes, THAT John Carpenter, whose original Halloween classic was the highest grossing independent film for several years (and the main Halloween theme is VERY iconic). I’ve only barely skimmed through this so I don’t know what stuff is great/creepy/whatever. Post whatever you find here that I’m leaving out if you’re more familiar with his stuff than I am.
