Glad no one is dying. I understand why writing this up is important. I did the same for my Facebook. I set a successor and they are going to deactivate my account if I die young.
On another app I'm on, if you know you're sick, you can set it to self-destruct.
100% certain you discussed this with the mods and no one can take over all the work you and Firewolf do, this is fair and understandable. So without moderation, disabling posts makes the most sense to me. The archival option sounds like a fair compromise for people who don't want to see it go into maintenance. Allow logins and reading only. I like that one.

Sorry if these questions have been asked (and answered):
1. What is maintenance mode? Is that where the board is locked so no one can enter but the board itself is still alive?
2. Why wouldn't you want the board to continue after your death(s)? You have a great community here and I'd think you want to keep it going, kinda like a nation which goes on long after the deaths of the founders, the original government congressmen/senators/ministers, and the President.

No one would be able to log in except staff in MM.
Many sites die with the owner like a social media account. Seems like the mods wouldn't be equipped to take over and that this is what makes the most sense and also to not burden someone else with running the forum.
But I will let Christina or Xea answer.

E. Netzer, Leaving it either in maintenance mode where only staff can log in, or in a read-only archival state for everyone seem like the best options. The staff members here are wonderful people, but are also unpaid volunteers. There are a lot of things to which only Firewolf and I have access and only things that we can fix. It would be unfair to ask moderators who do not know how to code to try to maintain code they haven't written. Firewolf and I created a lot of the plugins and features of this forum ourselves. If anything breaks, we have to fix it ourselves. If Firewolf dies, his paid server dies with him, and things on this forum will break. Firewolf is second in line and does not want to take upon himself all of my responsibilities. I respect that. It would be an enormous and unfair request to ask someone to keep this forum going in the event of a tragedy. We also have ad-free sponsors and do not expect them to keep spending money if I die. These are only a few examples. I agree with the social media metaphors a few users have mentioned. All of those accounts are going to die with me. They will not turn into memorials for me. Like I said though, I'm not terminally ill and ProBoards is not facing imminent bankruptcy. Leaving private messages open will allow members to exchange private information should they desire. I do thank you very much for the compliment and I can change the terms of this "will" with the ProBoards officials at any time. As of right now, when considering the dozens of things that keep this site going, it would be most appropriate to allow the forum to die with me. The goal of this thread wasn't to create unnecessary worry, but rather to serve as a courtesy. I'm sorry if this thread has caused anyone stress.
