This is for my 72 yo mother-in-law and her 92 yo mother. Shotguns, semi-autos, bazookas, claymores, etc are out.
She was home a couple of months ago when someone tried to break in. She keeps the doors locked and the guy didn't get in, but now she's terrified of any noise. She doesn't sleep well because of this incident and it's affecting her health. I want to recommend a home security system that hopefully will give her some peace of mind.

Move her to Vermont.
There some towns there, where the residents refer to as the "high crime areas" get something like 2 thefts a year.

just get her a home alarm that has wireless fobs. I hit the panic button on mine once when I was trying to get the keys out of my pocket. Cops were there in 2 minutes.
