I used to live with this one old couple and they would always leave their doors open, even car doors. They did not even drive with seat belts on. So whatever they went out I would lock the door lol. Scares me when things are not locked down.

If I'm home then there is a virtual plethora of loaded firearms, knives, clubs, etc. If I'm not home, the doors are locked and that's about it. If they can take care of a dog then any medium sized breed would be good (a german shepherd, perhaps? They are super friendly but very defensive). Otherwise you probably need some type of alarm system, preferably a cellular one. If you think they could possibly, safely, handle a firearm - get them a little .380ACP or 9mm with a 4" barrel and some heft to it. In a super-lightweight gun these calibers have some kick/snap to them but if you buy something heavier and not meant for concealment they are manageable for about any shooter. You could even get a .22LR or .25ACP that has zero kick, it's better than nothing. Or split the difference and go with a .32. My point is that anything is better than nothing and a "bang" can be just as good of a deterrent as a bullet in the chest. Again, the key there is "safely handle". If they're jumpy and you think it's likely they'll cap you when you come over for tea then don't arm them. A stun gun, taser, and/or pepper spray are also good non-lethal deterrents. If you want to go the pepper spray route, I *highly* recommend Fox Labs Mean Green cone spray : www.foxlabs.com/pepperspray.shtml / www.foxlabs.com/meangreen/index.shtmlNot only is it 3.5 million scoville, it also dyes the assailant green for days : ) -darc
