I want to be a better person, but now I'm not sure if it matters. I've been doubting fate a lot recently, and it seems like karma doesnt exist and that my actions have little to no consequence as it is =/

You cant look at it like that. Dont be good for the sake of reward or going to heaven. Be a good person because it's the right thing to do regardless. Why make things harder than they have to be?

Yes it does seem like karma doesnt exist sometimes in that bad things happen to good people. So why would you make it worse?

Why go out of your way to be a jerk? It takes equal effort to go out of your way to be nice.
I believe if you're nice, you'll attract niceness. try it out.

Dont look at life as a system of punishment and reward, But yes, your actions DO have consequences. Even if they're not immediate, they are there.

To me, karma is not god, but can be a power of a god if one exists. You may not see the karma or feel it yourself, but it comes when most people don't expect it. My dads's stepmom spent her life being mean and abusive to her children. Her death was slow and extremely painful due to illness and disease. Almost no one empathized or pittied her because of her deeds. Karma, I think, will always react, it just doesn't necessarily always come immediately.
But, be nice. Just because you don't feel or notice karma reacting to you, being kind to someone could make a day easier to a person in a really deep, dark spot in their life. Trust me, I've been on both ends of that pole.
However, being yourself as someone else said is truly the best way to go. If you do choose to change, do it slowly and with support of at least one person.
