I've always wondered how you're able to ask a dive shop to go diving, they put you on a boat and take you out to the middle of the ocean and there's ALWAYS badass diving

The local dive shops do all their diving usually with a 5-10 mile radius so they know the local spots very well. There have generations of people local diving and always sharing updated information..

I need to take some diving classes first.
However, diving on an aircraft carrier is on my list of things I have to do before I die.

The boats around here go to the same 10 places over and over again, and know which ones are good in what seasons / conditions. Skippering a whale watching or sport fishing boat is a lot harder in my opinion. Scuba diving your bound to see something and if the visibility sucks it's no one's fault, but if you're doing whale watching / sport fishing it's pretty lame when no fish/whales.

Sportfishing operations arent too tough actually. remember they are all tied to the other 500 boats that head out every day, the commercial fleet which is out 24/7 and utilizes spotter planes/satellite overlays/historical info etc. also narrow down that there are only a handful of places within distance of the point that they'll actually find fish on regularly.
BTW - same 5 spots for scuba in SD battle ship in Mission Beach, La Jolla preserve, Point Loma Kelp, La Jolla Kelp, Coronado islands....right?

There's a couple of others. "5 fathoms" a little coral head thing, there's three boats off mission and each one is (several, really) a dive unto itself, a few options off la jolla (marine room, hospital point near the seal beach thing), there's a p-38 plane, a super deep wreck called the hogan in like ~150' of water, then there's an old navy research tower.
