It's not that bad to rent it (but it is expensive to buy it). If you go to an area that is common for diving, you can rent a 2 tank dive with gear plus a guide and boat charter for ~$150 ish.
And, that's in the US. If you go down to Mexico, you can get 8 dives with gear for ~$250.
I got lucky on my gear - everything I need for $500ish.
