Ideally, what do you want from work? Is it what you have right now? I don't think I've ever been happy with work, and I'm nearing 40 and still don't have a career or even know what I want.

I'd like to do more with my life and make more money. I never really found myself.

I'm 42, I found I liked computers when I had to do a lot of troubleshooting and typing. I got fired when I was 16 when working at the local grocery store.

I've never really had a career. I've had a bunch of jobs all my life. I'm still looking for something perfect.

Ideally, I'd work for my church, but they don't have any paying jobs.

Ideally, I'd have a career by now but I've been doing odds and ends jobs my whole life. I need to find something I love.

Working in a supermarket definitely isn't my dream job, but it's better than nothing.

I didn't expect to be someone's paper slave my whole life. I'm not in my dream job.

I’m still waitressing.
Before we moved long distance I was making around $50 an hour on average with insane(basically free) health insurance/coverage. Now I probably make closer to $20 an hour with no insurance. Summer months I have a lot of 40-50 an hour days but winter can be gross with some of my worst days being closer to 10 an hour. Granted that wasn’t the norm, but it did happen.
The main reason I’m still waitressing is I don’t really want a career. The things that I have felt passionate about, either weren’t necessarily suiting for making reasonable money or would require far too much of my time. (Writing, midwifery, etc).
I want to dedicate time to my children, which is difficult with 40+ hours a week. In the last year we have started up a small hobby farm/homestead which is something I have been waiting and wanting to do for the past 10+ years. But the animals are not cheap and they take A LOT of time and energy. I do really enjoy it all though, so I’d love to find a way to make it a profitable business. I’d be more than content making a net 20k a year for whatever the time it takes hourly on that endeavor. Ive half jokingly brought up the idea of doing a small farm petting zoo.
I did have an opportunity a year or so ago to take on a high school soccer coach job and I sort of regret not pursuing that. I have volunteer coached for the youth program and I love coaching. At the time, I was also really enjoying my waitress job and I couldn’t make both happen.
We’re making steps to move back to our other property and I’ll be commuting most of the summer. My bosses can’t lose me right now and I do enjoy my job to an extent. Not the BS but I have some great regulars that I love to banter with. Not exactly sure what the future holds. Hopefully we can buy more real estate and as for the rest, I’m not sure what will come of it.

I'm pretty content with my current position. It's a 5 minute drive from my house which is really great, I'm paid more than I deserve, and the job itself is super lowkey. I'll probably stick around another couple of years until I get bored.
My career in accounting is very stable, it's easy to find work and the jobs pay plenty well, but in no way would I say I'm passionate about it. If I won the lottery I'd be quitting the next day - it's a job so I can pay bills and that's basically all it will ever be. When I was much younger and worked in food service, I actually did enjoy it. I loved working with people and serving people as odd as that sounds, I just got satisfaction from bringing people things they enjoyed.

Different tech jobs all my life, and fast food, and never quite made the money I want. I'm not happy. I'm not sad. I could do better. But I don't try.

I don't want to sit in a career for 40 years, but I'm also getting no benefits or anything out of the job I have. It's like there's no happy medium.
