I was reminded with problems with concerts starting on time due to the Madonna being sued for being two hours late thread.
If I haven't EVER been to a concert that ever started on time in Houston it was close to that. Some I can't remember, such as seeing U2 twice in high school (yes, I've actually seen a *few* not too underground, big acts, believe it or not). That was a few years before I started keeping diaries so I can't look it up. Even Prince was 45 minutes late (since there's no such thing as a free lunch but at least he put on a pretty good show, as per usual, as we got free tickets for that). And they'd said for years that Houston was close to being "happening" but I'm not sure if that really has taken hold. After all, when the Armageddon movie came out (with Bruce Willis and his ragtag team vs. the huge asteroid), a free trip to NASA was offered for movie sweepstakes and no one claimed the winning ticket
Cardi's was a legendary club in Houston, for two reasons: one was for the artists that performed there. They had some hitmakers that weren't big enough to sell out big venues, such as Modern English (you know, the "Melt with You" people), along with legendary metal bands, as I have an audio recording from the radio from the Blitz International Tour with Celtic Frost, Running Wild and Voivod (which CF and Voivod I've mentioned in threads in the last year).
The other reason was Cardi's was NOTORIOUS for never starting shows on time.
When I went to see King Kobra--luckily the day after high school let out for summer--I called them to see when it would start. They said doors opened at 8 to 8:30 p. m. and the show would start at 9, I think.
At 10 p. m. I yelled to a friend of mine, "who the hell is THIS?" when some opening band came on. I never to this day found out who that was.
KK didn't start until 11:30.
I called them months later to see when Alcatrazz would start. "Doors will open at 8 to 8:30 p. m. and the show would start at 9" was the reply, I think.
Oooh, crap. Heard this one before.
Me and a friend got there at 8:30. The show didn't start until 11:30, with NO opening act. It was sh*t to not get home until 1 a. m. on a blasted school night.
A well-known local photographer and writer, Gene B. for the Public News, attended the show (along with the K. Kobra one). The previous P. News issue was available at the concert, which stated "Gene B. says we simply have to plug Alcatrazz. Ok, consider them plugged. We would also tell you where they're playing if we weren't still mad at Cardi's. But we are still mad, so you'll have to ask someone else." Makes you wonder what they did, unless it was just the usual always starting late as hell crap. They would also come and go over the years, going out of business, then some moron would buy the rights to the name or whatever but hopefully they're gone for good. At least with the last setup they looked like they were a really big, nice club, but why would you keep the sh*t name they made for themselves? Especially with the (hopefully final) stand of theirs someone said in a comment they watered down their drinks.
Ozzy Osbourne and Anthrax was knocked down quite a bit when me and my friend were asked to show our tickets THREE effings times during Anthrax and when Ozzy first hit the stage. That got old and I was pissed off throughout most of Anthrax due to that.
When I went to the Fox, local glam band Calamity Jane and Scatterbrain show they had a table roped off that said "reserved". Whoever was *supposed* to be there never showed up. There was nowhere to sit; people were lined and leaning against the walls and I was sitting on a carrying case of some sort...until I had to go to the bathroom. Someone had taken my seat once I had returned so I had to stand until Scatterbrain arrived (most of us didn't want C. Jane onstage but they were part of the package).
Tell of your crappy concert stories.
