So, typists, did you learn to type in school or before school and do you use home row?

Mavis Beacon taught me typing on Windows 3.1 long before I had a typing class in school.
However, I don't type "correctly" as in I invented my own way to type. I can still type close to 100 words per minute without even looking at the keys. The only time I would encounter an issue is if I'm met with a keyboard that's split in half. Some people actually have those. I type a little more with my right hand than my left hand.

There was a class and I hated it because what they wanted me to do with my fingers made no sense. I was using a computer before that class and had to relearn.

I did have one but I kinda do my own thing. I'm not always on home row.

I remember my broken heart when I learned Mavis Beacon wasn't a real human.

I learned home row and all in school, but I don't type that way too much anymore.

My dad had a laptop for work when I was kid long before they were commonplace. The computer had a game on it, which was sort of space invaders like, where you had to type words as they came from the top of screen down before they reached the bottom. At higher levels it started introducing more things - sentences, numbers, all that type of stuff. That's how I learned, playing this game.
By the time I got to high school I had to take a keyboarding class. The first day we had to take a test to set our base words-per-minute, to compare to the end of class how much we improved. I took mine, and the teacher got the results and literally thought I was cheating. He made me retake it with him standing behind me. When I did around 100 each time, he told me I didn't need the calss and to go to the office and I would just have study hall that semester instead of keyboarding

Tim05, How do you even cheat on a typing test? You have to hit the keys.
