Ever notice (I'm sure you have) how the guests numbers are around 10 times higher than the members? Yet few of them register, why is this? The explanation is obvious, (at least to me) there is practically nothing to see and nothing to check out. Highlighting one or two threads or blogs (what's the difference) doesn't cut it. Why is it all being hidden like a secret 007 James Bond/CIA thing?
If you want the site to grow, then it's time for a change. I have been a member on another site for 10 years now. It's almost 100% open for the whole world to read. Yes, there is a closed section for online members only, but 95% of the site is open. BTW, I don't wish to brag (well maybe just a little) but out of 20,000 plus members I am #2 on the overall points. I know a thing or two about how to increase traffic. More traffic means more revenue and advertising.
No need to worry about spammers as you have a waiting time for acceptance of registration. So what have you got to lose by opening things up?

The boards are closed for a reason. The closed boards contain sensitive topics and it's to protect the members.

The privacy of people here is more important than growth. I like having a close-knit community. I'm not for opening up the forum to the public. There's no reason to do that. Everything that's open gives a guest a taste of how we interact.

To me, it's not a game of numbers. The guest # is not 10x higher than members.
An average of 80 members log in per day. An average of 57 guests visit per day.
Most "guests" are web crawlers.

Forums who keep everything 100% put everyone's privacy at risk. I would not join a forum that is left open like that. I feel safe here.

It's not about post counts and number counts. It's about having a community where people feel safe about sharing the littlest of thigs to most serious of things. It would be careless to open up a forum 100% when people are sharing secrets about their home, life, health, sexuality, and more. People post here BECAUSE it's kept more private, and would leave if it were opened.

With online privacy, it would be extremely careless to have a forum that's 100% open to the public, unless it's a tech support forum. Forums where people discuss peronal details about their lives should always have limited guest viewing.

With all the responses I sense a "leave it all as is" mentality. Nothing at all wrong with that. Privacy has come up as an issue, I get it.
So the feedback thus far indicates to me that the site is closed by virtue of the fact, that members prefer it that way. Am I reading this correctly?

I wouldn't have told you what I did about myself if people could google my name and read it here. The health board is private and I like it that way when I share private stuff about myself. This board is public though.

@lbj, No one makes money off this forum btw. There's no revenue generated for any of the staff or members or Christina. ProBoards the company might benefit.

No revenue or profit for us. Someone on the forum pays to remove the ads that came with the forum. More views would mean we have to pay more to remove more ads lol.

I have nuclear powered ad blockers that are so powerful that even Charles Manson would be afraid of them if he were still around! So I just presumed that there were ads everywhere, but I just wasn't seeing them.
