In 1850, quarry owner James Harrison of Charmouth, West Dorset of England, send a large boulder containing fossil bones, including bones of the legs and a skull, found in the cliffs of Black Ven between Charmouth and Lyme Regis, to Richard Owen at the British Museum. It was a remarkable specimen – the first almost complete dinosaur skeleton ever recovered
Owen’s fossil became buried again in the large collection of the Natural History Museum in London. Only now – at last – a research team supervised by paleontologist David Norman from Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences rediscovered the specimen, and comparing it to other specimens hosted in the collections of the Bristol City Museum and the Sedgwick Museum, Cambridge, published a proper scientific description of the Scelidosaurus species.....
