There's a young man, about age 19 who wants to run for a leadership position at my church when it reopens. The issue is that the position is generally for people who have been in the church longer than he's been alive. He is on the Autism Spectrum and I think that plus his age will affect how people vote. I wonder if there's a way I can talk to him and encourage him to do something that might be a better use of time.

Are any other positions open? Maybe he can be a youth Sunday School teacher?

Something like that would be much better for him. I'll have a talk with the pastor.

What's the worry? That he might be upset over losing or something else?

I think you can just be supportive, but I'm curious what you think the problem is.

Sorry. I'm worried about him getting hurt. He deserves a position within the church, but one for which he is more qualified. I don't want to see him lose against an adult who is more right for the position. I don't know if he's understand why he lost.

Is there an official age requirement to apply? Maybe you can nudge him to be the sunday school teacher?

Is he functional? Maybe he'll be a great leader.

Maybe talk to the pastor and see what you can brainstorm.

The issue is that he doesn't understand the elder role and I'd rather he applies for something that suits his skills. I don't want him to go through an election where he most likely has to lose.

I see what you are saying, and don't worry, it's a hard topic, so I know you aren't being rude. You genuinely care. Talk to your pastor. Sent him an email. See if he can step in.

Yes, an email is going to be my only option right now. But if he thinks we should allow him to run, then I'm fine with that too.

You're not being rude. You're concerned for his feelings.
