Kind of a weird resolution, but realized that I'm too "go with the flow" and wanted to feel like I'm more prepared for things.
Two or three false fire alarms in my building the last week made me realize I want a bag I can quickly grab with some emergency essentials. I've also been thinking about putting together a basic survival bag anyway.
What are some must haves? Bonus points for any pics.

If there's an earthquake and you're several miles from home, you may be walking. Mostly a blanket, a few protein bars, and some comfortable shoes.

I feel like no matter what you put in the bag, what you're really going to want is your birth certificate and some paper stuff and like pictures and things...... you'll be able to get access to socks and underwear and all your electronic files but you're going to be real upset when you lose your family photos and birth certificate, your marriage license, that hand written love letter from the girl of your dreams... things like that. Might as well make a bag with all that sort of stuff and put it in your entry closet and hope that the fire comes from the back of the house instead of the front.......

I've been debating about making a bug out bag but then it's probably going to be similar as my backpacking setup.

This is a good idea actually. I don't have a survival kit either.

Having a backpack ready sounds like a good idea.
