My mom and I are flying from Toronto (yyz) to Puerto vallarta. We have a less than one hour lay over in the Dallas airport. Do they automatically pass the bags along from plane to plane? If not were kind of screwed .
It's all with the same air line American

No, they make you retrieve your bags from the tarmac and haul them over to the next plane yourself.

You will have to go through security, but the checked bags will transfer. 1 hr is cutting it close on an international transfer

depends on how you fly, customs, and were you do your connections.
For example:
Atlanta > Toronto > Winnipeg
You fly from Atlanta > Toronto. You pick up your bags in Toronto, put them on a belt, and then have them checked again on their way to Winnipeg. That's because of Customs.
Atlanta > Minnesota > Winnipeg:
Your bags are transferred from Atlanta > Minnesota leg and you pick them up (Customs) in Winnipeg.

Yes, dude, you're fine. The bags will transfer. You will clear US customs before leaving Canada, so your layover should be plenty of time assuming your flight is on time. You will have to go through Mexican customs once you land in Mexico.
