There's actually quite a bit of different folklore surrounding soulmates.
My favorite is 'Twin Flames' from Greek mythology. In short, the legend goes that humans were originally creatures with 2 heads, 4 arms and 4 legs. They could either be male-male, female-female or male-female. Fearing that the humans would become more powerful than the gods, Zeus split them in half so the two halves would spend lifetimes searching and yearning for one another thus weakening the humans. The two halves would not be able to reunite unless each person was complete. If found the two halves found each other, they would experience no greater joy than with their true other half. I enjoy Plato's take on soulmates because it includes both hetero and homosexuality as well as the idea that each half is a sufficient individual but together they are stronger.
