Not so different from any other point in history, the jewish people were getting oppressed. Antiochus IV Epiphanes had outlawed Judaism and as you'd expect, it pissed a few people off. The Maccabees were a small group of jewish soldiers who decided to stand up and fight. They were greatly outnumbered but were able to come forth victorious. When they reclaimed the temple, it was found that there was only enough oil to light the candelabra for one night. This was a problem because it is required to burn through the night every night. Miraculously the oil managed to last for eight nights; the time needed to prepare more oil.
We celebrate this holiday on the 25 of Kislev (jewish calendar) by lighting candles (or oil-based light) every night for eight nights to remember the story. Each night an additional candle is lit until the entire menorah is lit.

Did anyone else here learn this story from watching Rugrats as a kid? XD Because I did! The grandpa explained Hanukah (and they acted it out) during one episode.
