For fun I'm going to start this thread and see if I can answer some anatomy questions AND if you give me a body part/organ/tissue/etc I'll find an interesting or weird fact about it!

The medulla oblongata in the brain is in charge of regulating heartbeat. From there it is up to different parts of the heart. Starting with the SA (sinoatrial) node which recieves the signals and acts kind of like a natural pacemaker. The signal starts in the SA node, which is just a group of specialized cells in the right atria and causes the walls of the atria to contract, forcing tricuspid and bicuspid valves to open and blood to flow into the ventricles. After this occurs, the AV (atrioventricular) node, another cluster of cells except located between the atria and ventricles, and acts like a gate that slows the electrical signal before it enters the ventricles. This delay gives the atria time to contract before the ventricles do. The His-Purkinje Network is a pathway of fibers sends the impulse to the muscular walls of the ventricles and causes them to contract. This forces blood out of the heart to the lungs and body.Once that is done, the SA node fires another impulse and the cycle begins again.

In young athletes, sudden death appears to be associated most strongly with congenital cardiac abnormalities; running long distances can put a strain on the heart and can cause sudden death in seemingly healthy individuals. Article: www.runnersworld.com/health/heart-health

My right armpit usually stays dry, and my left sweats a LOT. I use certain dri, which helped the right one. It never helped the left one. Why?

Why blood doesn't go back in a heart after it goes out? There are valves in the heart that only open one way that (when fully functional) do not allow blood to pass back into the heart after it has been pumped out. When these valves do not close completely they allow backflow and cause heart murmurs. However, most of the time heart murmurs are not life threatening. My right armpit usually stays dry, and my left sweats a LOT. I use certain dri, which helped the right one. It never helped the left one. Why? There a=are several reasons this can happen. Most of the time, excessive sweating in one armpit is caused by a more concentrated distribution of sweat glands on that armpit in comparison to the other. Relatedly - over active sweat glands on one armpit may be the reason for more sweating on it. Your body is not totally symmetrical, so there can be differences between your right and left sides! Also if you’re more of a right hand user (i.e. use your right hand to move objects, lift things, write etc) the over use of one hand may be the reason for more sweat on that armpit. With the certain dri - my guess is that the skin on the left armpit is non reactive to the deodorant. Why are some people's little toes longer than their big toe? As far as I know, it's simply genetics. ouob Fun fact - when the second toe is longer than the big toe, it's called a "Morton's Toe." Do you know what kind of tension builds up when you leave these things unanswered? Nope xD How come some people have white ovals on their nails? Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you are referring to the lunula. The lunula is the visible part of the root of the nail. It is composed of underdevloped collagen bundles and loose dermis. It appears whitish because there is a layer in the epidermis that is thickened (stratum basale) and conceals blood vessels. Why do some people have then and some don't? Some peoples eponychium covers this area. Again, it probably has something to do with genetics as to why it covers. It's probably better if your lunula is covered because since it is essentially the root of nail growth, if damaged, your nail will be permanently deformed. Fun fact - the shape of the lunula matches the shape of the free edge of the nail. _____________________________________________ Irrelevant edit: eyyyyyyy 1,600th post )o)

Is there a reason some people's nails curl a bit instead of grow straight? Is it bad? Fingernails are really great indicators of some health problems. Fingernil curling can be caused by a number of factors including vitamin B12 deficiency, low oxygen levels in your blood (especially prevalent with people who struggle with Asthma or other lung diseases such as COPD), low iron levels, liver problems and even some hand sanitizers. Why do men get bald hair a lot and mostly women don't do it? This is because of hormones. Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestostrene (DHT) which causes hair follicles to die and men to bald.
