I now live in a dog friendly apartment close to work, so I could hypothetically come home and play with it during lunch every day.
My room mate has a dog but damnit, I want my own

don't do it. you're too young and have way too much sh*t going for you to be tied down with the responsibility of caring for a dog

Pets are great company. Just check the lease carefully. Lots of landlords are evil about pets.

I know over here to rent, pets have extra fees.
If you can handle all the responsibilities, a pet is great company.
