I grew up with fake trees every year. Never had a real one. Family and I are talking about getting a real one this year.
EDU on picking one, getting it home, setting it up, keeping it alive for the season, and any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Don't buy one off a 'lot', find a live tree farm in your area and go cut one down. They usually supply you with a saw to use. They will net it up and you can tie it to the top of your car. Ask about the stands that they recommend or sell there - most of these places have been in business for years and have the cheap/simple sh*t that works.
When you get it home drop the cut end in a bucket of water until you are ready to set it up. When you are ready cut the bottom inch off the bottom of the tree, put it on the stand, and keep the reservoir full of water.
If you keep it full of water it will last until new years.

make sure to get yourself a good stand, not a cheap piece of sh*t. It will make your life much easier. Cut down a fresh tree and don't put it up until about the middle of Dec

Super magical awesome watering trick!
Say you're going to be gone for a few days, and your tree is drinking a liter a day or so, fill a few wine bottles with water, thumb over the opening obviously, flip the b**ch upside down and prop it up in the stand/trunk vertically. Whenever the water level in the stand drops below the mouth of the wine bottle, the wine bottle will empty it's contents into the stand.

What types are available near you (blue spruce, fraser fir, etc)?? I look for one that doesn't have any huge bare spots mostly. I also like taller, wider ones personally.
