My boss just told me that he expects me to work. Is that even allowed? As of the entire year I knew I had the day off. Can you be fired for not coming in on a holiday?

I work in an office. It's nothing that can't wait a day.

I wouldn't go in. Schedules need to be up a week in advance.
4 days is not a week.

I wouldn't go in. Schedules need to be up a week in advance. 4 days is not a week. Be careful though, whatever you decide. In some jobs only short notification is required to inform employees. Guess it really depends if the day off is worth pissing off your boss/job. If your boss is just being a jerk, then take off. But if you think there will be "consequences" in the longterm, it might not be worth it. I'm off.

They can't force you to work a national holiday like that unless you're working in say, the ER.

Unless you're saving lives, don't give up your holiday for some office paperwork

Before this, you thought you'd have the day off. I would tell him that you arent coming in because you thought that was the understanding.
Then he can expect that you wont be there and it wont be a surprise.

You should get off on holidays you celebrate. Offer to work on Hanukkah

Will you get paid more or just the same as other days? Really lots of people have to work holidays, not just health workers, guess anyone getting it off is lucky. I would request it of in writing next year.
