Landlord is a huge factor that sometimes gets ignored during an apartment search. Try to talk to 1-2 other people in the building and make sure the landlord or management company fixes problems, etc.

If you want to move to an area with nicer schools.. move after school has started because prices usually go down.

Keep the commute you would have to make everywhere you usually go.

when using craigslist, if they don't have interior shots, it's a sh*t hole. drive by the places you like during the day and at night to see what the neighbors/neighborhood is like. look for reviews if it's a large complex. prices are negotiable, always.

Seriously look into Landlords.
I'm hating mine already because I didn't realize when we found the place that it was a broken up couple who hate each other, but both own the place, are my landlords

Random, but check cell phone coverage inside the place and if you can try to test how much noise travels through the floors and walls. Something that I hated about my old place was hearing neighbors above me and next to me pretty damn easily. New place, can't hear a damn thing and I love it.

read online reviews. if it's all negative with the random absolute glowing review...those are likely staff.
my biggest tips that really works well:
drive through the complex/neighborhood at night. see what type of activity is going on.
also check out what type of cars are predominant.

All the ones in here are good. Get a tour of the building, inside and out.

I'm a big fan of sitting outside and watching the neighbors too.
