Anyone know anything about these... a friend of mine is looking into the Lowrance HDS units and some of the Humminbird units..
If he gets an HDS Gen2 it will be a 5" screen. HDS Gen1 would be a 7" screen.
the Humminbirds would be similar.
is down imaging necessary?

Down imaging = bottom only. You wont really see any fish/bait. It's excellent for bass fishing and has only a couple of saltwater uses. Personally, unless he's fishing bass strictly id go with a standard unit.
The HDS gen 1 and 2 are identical other than the processor speed. The gen 2 is certainly faster but your buddy needs to determine what is more important, speed between screens or screen size.

well, screen speed would be nice if you were going faster, right?
There is like one lake that we can actually go faster than 5mph.

The sonar beams will display the same image at basically the same time on gen 1 and the gen 2. The speed increase comes when switching between screens (navigation to fish finder, fish finder to split screen, etc).

I bought a cheap hummingbird bobber on amazon, didn't really work
Lowrance > humminbird. Both have sh*tty customer service (generally speaking) but lowrance makes a better unit.
