i start welding school next week. it's just a free, few week course.
help me pick out a helmet/hood/mask.
the guys at work tell me a ventilated one is just going to get in the way. are they necessary?
what size screen do you recommend? auto-darkening of course.
i don't really need a fancy one, just a quality one. i don't need designs or graphics either.
any brands to stay away from?

if you go auto get a speedglass and don't settle for anything less.
i got a cheap one and burned my eyes. i was at the DMV getting a license test 6 months ago and the 3 letters i missed weren't blurry, they weren't there, had to shift my eyes around to get it to come in clear.
i knew when i started it was a risk and i accepted it but goddamn wwhen it's staring you in the face it's completely different.
i threw out my cheapass autodark helmet and use a fixed glass with the big lens

i had a speedglas, but also have used a miller elite big window, both are awesome.
