I know what I want - money o a pre-paid visa card from WalMart. Then I can go online and buy my girls a ferret nation cage. They'd love it, and I'd be able to fit another couple ratty butts in it.

I usually never ask for anything. When my birthday came around this year I had people buy me stuff I needed for the house...if they asked.
My mom got my a new down comforter.

I'm being materialistic this year as well. I don't think there's anything wrong with that either.
And yes, I had a bad year, too. My boyfriend and I finally have clothes again, but we have pretty much no other possessions after the house fire so we spent about a thousand dollars apiece on each other.
In total, I think my entire family and my boyfriend will have spent up to four thousand dollars on Christmas this year.
And it feels great because we've had so many years where we had no Christmas at all. It's been a lot of shopping and stuff, but I feel good about it.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying good gifts and good food. It doesn't mean you aren't enjoying your family and those you love as well. Who doesn't like presents and a good time? There's nothing wrong with enjoying life and holidays!
And I know my boyfriend is going to cry a bunch about his Mom dying and this being the first Christmas without her (he already has a few times this month) so I'm trying to make it as good as possible otherwise to help him get through it. We still have her ashes, so we're going to buy her some flowers and give them to her.

I'm sorry to hear about your house fire. Mine went up in smoke in '09, and I lost my dog - not nearly as heart breaking as losing your mom, though. :/ Tell your boyfriend I wish him a good holiday.
