Leaving on the 28th. Never been there before. It's going to be a family trip. Anyone ever been there? Anyone can offer a personal experience or tips?

I would love to go, but I have a tendency to get stir crazy at little resort enclosures and would probably end up getting myself in trouble eg dead

been there 4 times, but i wasn't old enough to appreciate it properly. i still can't hear bob marley without wanting to be on a beach in jamaica doing absolutely nothing.

stay in the tourist areas and it's great
otherwise, you probably wouldnt feel too safe.

I liked it a lot. A bit sketchy outside of the resorts but I braved it. I'd stick to either Montego Bay or Negril
Negril is catered more towards tourism.

definitely eat some Jerk Chicken from a street vendor. You will see them cooking it in big oil barrels.
It is so freakin good.

Jamaica is not what it used to be. Like said above, stick with the tourist areas ONLY.

if you screw around, you're going to get murdered
and no thats not a joke
its one of the smallest nations in the world, yet has one of the highest murder rates in the world
i have family there, half the time its the cabs that get you, you go in looking like an american tourist, they go into an alley and either kill you or beat you and take your stuff
tourist destinations are 100% safe, if you decide to leave and wander on your own, learn the safe streets, learn the dialect and the slang, the basics at least

crazy sh*t happens all the time, like random gunfire going off
people will dance in the club, and you'll casually witness someone walking across the dancefloor and stab someone
No gay stuff either, don't do anything gay even remotely. No gay jokes, no gay gestures, nothing that can be perceived as gay
my cousin was in kingston, and there were these 2 guys that looked like they were dancing together in a gay way, the DJ stopped the music, pointed, and said "battttymon batttymon get em" a couple of people ran them out of the club

even though its a tourist trap, go to margaritaville...they have a giant waterslide that shoots you into the ocean.
