lets say i log onto the board on one tab, open another tab and don't come back for more than five minutes. does it show me as offline when i'm idle?

I do know this from experience.
It's just the same as when you exit the forum without logging out. It shows you for up to 20-30 minutes (or something like that) after you've exited the forum and/or gone idle. It renews your status and starts that time over again every time you go to a new page.
Me and my friend figured this out over the phone on some proboards forums.
