I just got back into the game for the first time in years
Much harder than I remember. Got up to just north of 100k people in one of my cities, but everything seems to have stopped progressing, and I still have a bit of space to build

I was about to download it, when I realized that I probably still had my CDs laying around. Found both a regular copy and a deluxe version.

It helps when you have about 2GB in mods, including the ones that help boost road capacity

I hate how when traffic gets bad they tell you to put in bus stops and then noone rides the bus and the advisor tells you that you're a moron and that you should demolish the stop.

Apparently the Rush Hour expansion fixes the traffic/public transport rubbish. I don't have it though

I don't find 4 to be much like the first 3. Its a pain in the dick compared to the others. 3 is pretty much 6x6 tiles, road, fountain, road, 6x6 tiles. sh*t hits astronomical in no time and you are booming plus rolling in the money. 4 is a lot harder to get a profitable city. A lot more strategy and using multiple cities networked together to get one, plus a lot more time.

I just went through a massive clean house on most of the city to get it to where it is now. I wiped out most of the industrials, in hopes of bringing them back as high tech, which brought the commercials to a boom. Now it's basically stopped. The city profits about 5k per month as it stands now.

Have you tried a dedicated Industrial city? It's a good way to get jobs out of your main city to really help with the Environment rating, which seems to always be fully red
Shared city resources is a big thing they pushed in 4.
