Hallowe'en is the Christianised version of the ancient Irish Samhain ("Summer's end"). It marks the time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is thinnest.
Jack o'Lanterns, candles in a carved turnip, were lights to keep malicious spirits away. Disguises were worn to make it harder for ghosts with a grudge to find you.
A traditional Hallowe'en food in Ireland is Barm Brack, a fortune telling fruit cake.
