To tag a person in a thread, you must use their registered name and not their display name.
For example:
You need to tag me as @ admin, and not @ Christina.
For today's birthday,
Controlled needs to be tagged as @ Clorress.
The @ sign needs to be used without the space, however.
There is one known bug in the simple tagging feature. If you advance pages within a thread, it may not show you the correct names unless you refresh the page.

To make tagging simpler, there is a 
button within every thread, quick reply, and advanced reply. You can click on it and start typing either the display name or the registered name.

With simple tagging, you can tag all staff members, all the people on the current page of the thread you are viewing, or any individual person on the current page of the thread you are viewing.
