SPOILER ALERT! If you have any intention of playing the Halo games yourself and want a completely vanilla experience, venturing down this thread will spoil the content for you. Also, it is requested that no one spoils any of the story for me as well. Please don't post any story/plot details that haven't already visited in the thread and on stream. Also, please don't try to share any tips or tricks or anything else that could alter my own experience with playing these games. I'm genuinely excited to see it all for myself. No backseat gaming!
So, after 10 years of being an Xbox main, I finally started playing Halo. I'm doing it! Got the Master Chief Collection downloaded the other day, looked up the correct order to play the games in, and fired it up on stream. And I'm pleased, I'm liking this so far. And I'm excited to jump back into it and continue the story here in a couple days. For those interested in checking out my experience, you can catch my streams on Twitch, I make going live posts in the Live Streaming thread whenever I go life. Between streams I kinda want to stop in here and give my thoughts on what I played and to get some of your feedbacks as well. So, here's entry one:
I'm a bit of a graphics junky so, honestly, it's a little rough for me to go back and play a game that was released nearly two decades ago. Halo: Combat Evolved first released in November of 2001 (this game is ancient!) and was rereleased on the Xbox 360 as Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition 10 years later in November 2011. It was rereleased again as part of the Halo Master Chief collection on Xbox One a few years later in November 2014. The game features 10 story missions as you discover and try to gain control of the Halo, a space station/planetary ring floating in space. Beyond that, I have no idea what the overall story of Halo is about. I've never really paid it any attention until recently as we look forward to the release of Halo Infinite later this year. I figured it's about time to check out the Halo hype for myself.
And so far, I'm not disappointed. We'll see how I really feel once I've completed this first game, but so far I'm intrigued. I want to know more about the Halo, why it's there, why Master Chief was in Cryo at the beginning of the game, and where this story really started. The gameplay isn't too bad for a game of this age. It would be nice to be able to sprint to speed up navigation, especially because you do retrace your steps quite a bit, but the Warthog comes in handy when you need to traverse a larger area. Gunplay is simple enough, though you can't ADS (aim downsight) with most weapons, but they are fairly accurate and do a decent enough amount of damage. The rocket launcher was certainly a blast...
I've made it through 4 of the missions so far, having just found the Cartographer, which shows us where to find the Halo's control room. There's already been some concerns drawn from what I've experienced so far. Like, how does Keyes know how to fly this 'alien' aircraft? I've already got my suspicions, and while surfing the missions list I did find one that is just titled 'Keyes', so I'm curious to see what's going on with him. Is he some nefarious character with an ulterior motive? Only time will tell.
The continuation of my Halo experience will continue, as I saw, on my Twitch channel (twitch.tv/mzpanik). The next stream is going to be on Tuesday (5/25) at Noon CST. We'll continue where we left off, trying to gain control of the Halo. I'll see you guys then!
