How important do you think they are when you are trying to attract people to your online profiles? Do you use your real face? An avatar? Even forum avatars could influence how people see you, right? I've never used my face. I just use this avatar and it's how people have come to recognize me. People who know me IRL already know what I look like. What's your take?

I don't think it matters on forums, twitter, or instagram. No one cares there. But on Linked In and FB, people expect to see a face. Also, your face should probably be on dating profiles.

I guess the only time I'd want pictures to be real is a dating site, but even there they're fake to get people to talk to you.

I agree with your points on dating sites. Generally, I don't want my face online though.

I don't really care if people use their face or an avatar. I talk to people for their words, not their faces.

I expect most pictures to be doctored and I don't get why every employer on Linked In wants to see your face. You'll see me when I come in for an interview. You're not supposed to profile me that early on.

^I do hate that about Linked In. I never submit my photo with a resume. It has nothing to do with my ability to perform a job.

I hate anything that requires a photo. I might even NOT join a site that demands a real picture. Avatars and scenic pics are fine. I don't follow anyone simply for their face.

If I can get away with not using my face i'll do it. Used to have my face on this site years ago and then I removed it. Over the years I've become more self aware and people judge me first more by my appearance. "You have such big lips, are you half black?" I'd rather have people judge me for my personality and dark sense of humor then just my looks alone.

It shouldn't be forced, but I don't mind seeing faces. I don't follow anyone because of their face. I only follow people if I like their content.

I think profile pics might help get stalkers on Facebook. Otherwise, I don't see them really attracting people on Twitter or Instagram. The profile pictures are pretty small.

I don't even have my facebook picture as my own face, though there are other pictures of me on there that are 20 years old. Another reason I don't even use my face on facebook is I've had times where someone would stalk me there and cause of that I've also changed my last name on there as well.

My real last name isn't on Facebook either. There's a picture of me wearing sunglasses that I put up as my profile picture about 3 years ago. Maybe I'll change it when I turn 40.
