As someone who lives 45 minutes from SF, I have only done this once. It's nice if you like walking in general because you can look at the ocean, feel the wind, etc. Honestly, if you're not going during rush hour, there's really no "sea of honks," but at the same time, I agree that it isn't as romantic as the idea seems. Not worth a long drive at any rate. Since I live so close, it was just something to do with my grandma and cousin for the day.
