Personally, I think it's still so much easier to record onto video.
Also, why wasn't that considered stealing, but if you record to dvd or with your dvr then it is?

People weren't as devious back then. I had a dual-deck VCR at one point. I never even considered selling bootlegs. I still do have a VCR in the event that I want to watch an old tape that I recorded. I mainly used my VCR to record Hanson appearances. If recording was illegal, I'm not really sure why VCRs had a record function, or why dual-deck VCRs existed (which let you copy videos pretty easily).
Edit: On a somewhat related note, I notice that I still say "tape it" rather than "record it." Kids today probably wouldn't understand what that means.

i used to hook up my stereo to my tv and my nes to my vcr so i can record my game play. the stereo was just there for killer sound.

Kids today probably wouldn't understand what that means. there were several attempts to keep vcr's off the market. thankfully, they failed. taping something is perfectly legal, as long as you don't make any money on it. i used to have seven vcr's hooked up together. i seldom used all seven, but, i had them just in case. i generally used four or five to tape various things on different channels. in the morning, i would fast forward through the tapes, and copy the parts that i wanted. i had over two hundred eight hour tapes of stuff that i saved. sadly, i've only got about twenty of them now. a vcr is obviously better than dvd. the slow motion is better, and you can't go frame by frame with a dvd at all
