Been thinking about it for some time.
Quiet Peaceful
Big change from NYC
So it would include no wifi, no internet, no cell phone... and probably no stores anywhere near me.
How would a city guy survive?

Going from city life to off grid is a pretty serious change. What makes you consider it?

Sounds drastic. Do you think you can handle it?

You can find an internet provider rather than the obvious Hughes net. click here or here

I just want a change, but like I said, I'm used to the city life where everything is no more than 5 feet away.

You could practice by going camping for a weekend, and leaving your phone at home (or in the car).

How dead is mountain life exactly?

Cell/cable service can be scarce. Mail isn't delivered to your house. Stores are 20 miles away in some cases.

I think it's a big change that you'll need to get used to, but you 'll do fine.

How dead is mountain life exactly? Takes some getting used to, you just find different things to occupy your time. Instead of wasting hours on the internet, you clear brush, cut down dead trees, cut them up for firewood, work on the house so it's ready for winter/summer, sit on the porch drinking coffee and watching the birds/wildlife, read lots of books, work on things that truly interest you rather than finding things to passively entertain you (TV/internet). It is a big change, but if you can make it a couple of weeks then you're good.

So the opposite of my life now? absolutely, which is why it is so great. where we are now is pretty citified, with stores less than three miles away. the place that we had before this was perfect. you could see the stars at night because there was absolutely NO light, except for whatever light you had on in the house. the closest neighbor was half mile away. the closest business, a bp station, was five miles away. NOTHING within ten miles was open after 9pm. the forest was a hundred feet from our back door. even during the middle of the day, there wouldn't be more than five or six cars go past our house in an hour. early in the morning, you would hear the wild turkeys. it just don't get any better than that
