He subscribes to:
Car & Driver Road & Track Auto Week
Rolls down his window to hear any Ferrari/Lambo he sees on the street.
Looks through the window of any Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo in a parking lot, like a boy.
He drives a 2007 335i with a manual trans. Might get a Civic Si next.
He has money. Could buy a Veyron and it wouldn't dent his budget. Make that two.
I once asked him why he's never bought any of these cars he apparently lusts for.
He told me he'd feel embarrassed to be driving one. As if he were telling the world: "aren't I better than you?"
And he'd feel guilty about the low MPG.
Is this common among old, rich men?
What is the reason for his odd behavior?

That's why you get a nice/cool car that doesn't scream "douchebag"

I think there is something to be said for wealthy people that try not to falunt what they have and live normal lives. However, if he has worked hard all his life and has earned what he has, he should also be able to enjoy it. If it's what he truly desires, he should go for it! He doesn't have to flaunt it around in front of people. He doesn't have to worry about the low mileage if he doesn't drive the car for every day use, seems to me these types of cars are summer rides, not a trip to pick up milk.

Talked with a Ferrari restorer about this very subject. He told me that parking a Ferrari in public is more hassle than it's worth. Too many people that want to be you and damage your car with vandalism than those who want to be happy for you...

That's why you get a nice/cool car that doesn't scream "douchebag" Depends on the intent of the owner. Some 911 owners know every technical and historical aspect of their cars. Others are, well, poseurs.

I wouldn't be able to deal with having a car on the level of Lambo/Ferrari/Exotic because I would lose my sh*t when some asshole door dinged it or keyed it.

He could just get whatever he wanted and keep it in the garage. Take it to random track days in an enclosed trailer if he is too much of a whimp to have it out on the street.

There is that.
A lot of people will look at a Ferrari as a middle-finger on wheels when the owner just wants to enjoy the sounds and sensations of a wonderful car.
