I've always been scared of escalators and still am. I always keep my skirt and shoes far away from the edges of the step in any direction.
But at the same time, I've actually witnessed, first hand, someone's shoelace getting caught in an escalator. It was a little girl (and I was a little girl at the time, too) and her parents were yanking her by the arms, trying to get the shoelace out.
I don't know if it's because she had two people helping her (who weren't putting their hands on the steps, but had their hands much higher than that) or if not all escalators are dangerous, but she made it out fine. She even got to keep her shoe.
It was terrifying at the time though because I was standing right behind her on an escalator crowded with people (where people were shoving each other and stuff) expecting to see at any moment a little girl getting sucked inside and crunched to death, but it didn't happen that way.

In that case I think I'd just take the shoe off and let the escalator eat it. Shoes can be replaced. My body can't.
