^People know enough english there in most areas I learned (the hard way) that when someone says "o, they know english" that either : 1) They are flat out lying to you 2) The person who told you that goes only with yuppie tour groups with built in translators, etc. The first overseas trip I did (to Italy), I had a friend of a friend who told me that *everyone* speaks English and are super nice and all the dogs fart rainbows. I brushed up on my Italian before I went and it was good that I did - I don't do the typical "tourist" things (I hate tourists and when i am one I hate myself) so I only met 3 people in the two weeks I was in Italy that spoke a tiny bit of English... the rest looked at me like I was stupid when I spoke English, and like I was even more stupid when I attempted to speak Italian : ) Long story short, I know from first hand experience (in 7 different countries where I was told "everybody speaks English") that when people tell you that "everyone speaks English" that it is a fscking lie... and even if it wasn't, shouldn't you at least attempt to learn some of the language of the country you're visiting? It adds to the experience to make it more awesome. /Rant -darc
