I am toying with the idea of getting one to go to-from work, and enjoy the 90mpg, but holy crap they are expensive. I could get a 250cc sport bike, get a little less mileage, and not look nearly as gay for much less money. What gives?

except you don't have to register or insure a 50cc scooter in most states.
A 250cc bike would require all that plus a license to ride.
